Microsoft’s Next-Gen Xbox Set for 2027, Handheld Console Expected in 2025

Microsoft is reportedly making significant strides in its gaming hardware lineup, with plans to introduce an Xbox-branded handheld gaming device later in 2025 and a next-generation Xbox console targeting a 2027 release. These moves align with Microsoft's broader strategy of expanding its gaming ecosystem across multiple platforms.

Xbox-Branded Handheld Console Coming in 2025

The upcoming handheld gaming device, rumored to be in development under the codename "Keenan," is expected to bring Xbox's signature gaming experience to a portable format. Unlike cloud-based streaming devices such as the PlayStation Portal, this new Xbox handheld is likely to support native gaming. Reports suggest it will run on a Windows-based platform, granting users access to the Microsoft Store, PC Game Pass, and third-party applications like Steam.

By integrating Windows OS, Microsoft aims to create a versatile handheld gaming solution that caters to both casual and hardcore gamers. The device is being developed in collaboration with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and will feature an Xbox-branded design, including a dedicated Xbox guide button for seamless navigation.

Next-Gen Xbox Console Targeted for 2027

In addition to the handheld, Microsoft is also working on the successor to the Xbox Series X, with a projected launch in 2027. While specific details about its hardware and performance remain under wraps, reports indicate that Microsoft is focusing on a significant technical leap. The company is expected to enhance compatibility between PC and console platforms, possibly leveraging Windows integration to streamline game development.

Backward compatibility will likely be a key feature, ensuring that players can continue to enjoy their existing game libraries. Additionally, Microsoft might open up its ecosystem further by allowing access to third-party storefronts such as the Epic Games Store and GOG.

These developments reflect Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to evolving its gaming ecosystem, ensuring that Xbox remains competitive in the console market while also expanding its reach through portable gaming solutions.
